Meet Your Trainer: Wade Calkins
Peer Foundations is peer-led—taught by someone who understands recovery from both personal and professional experience.
Wade Calkins is a Parent Mentor and Training Coordinator with Family Nurturing Center and a person in long-term recovery with more than 10 years of continuous sobriety. His lived experience includes navigating the child welfare, family court, and criminal justice systems, rebuilding his life through recovery, and restoring his role as an engaged and present father.
Today, Wade works alongside fathers involved in the child welfare system, helping them navigate recovery, services, court requirements, and reunification. He brings that same combination of lived experience, practical knowledge, and hope into the classroom.
As FNC’s Training Coordinator, Wade facilitates Oregon’s 40-hour Adult Substance Use Disorder Peer Support Specialist training, helping future peers build the skills and confidence to use their own lived experience in service to others.
For Wade, peer support is more than a profession—it is the opportunity to show someone who may be struggling that recovery is possible, families can heal, and lives can change.
